GOUGH AND ME

When Gough Whitlam moves into her street in Cabramatta in 1957, eight-year-old Christine has little idea how her new neighbour, one of the most visionary and polarising political leaders of Australia, would shape the direction of her life.

Born to working-class parents and living in a fibro house built by her truck-driver father, Christine simply dreams that one day she might work as a private secretary like her aunt. But when the reforms Whitlam championed give Christine the chance to go to university, her world expands.

Written with genuine heart and humour, Gough and Me is a nostalgic and deeply personal memoir of social mobility, cultural diversity, and the unprecedented opportunities that the Whitlam era gave one Australian working-class woman.

THE POWER OF MANY VOICES

From the focal point of the recent #METOO movement, discussion has escalated around the pervasive scale of violence, prejudices and unwanted sexualisation perpetrated against women on a daily basis in our communities.

While these issues have been explored for decades - from suffragettes to feminism - we can expect many more voices to join the demand for urgent change, as technology enables strength in numbers and fosters the courage to speak out, share experiences and ideas.

IN THE NATIONAL INTEREST - A NEW SERIES

Pocket sized but powerful, In the National Interest is a new series in the Monash University Publishing list that is focused on the challenges Australia confronts. The series informs, influences and inspires public discourse. Showcasing experts both from within Monash and beyond, these short, thought-provoking and accessible books will address the major issues of our times, from public policy to governance and government. Perfect for the thoughtful commuter or an intellectual lunch break.

So far in the series, former PM, Kevin Rudd, examines the conservative movement and Murdoch monopoly, Rachel Doyle SC (a leading barrister who has appeared several Royal Commissions) looks at Power and Consent, Bill Bowtell (leading health policy strategist and an architect of Australia's renowned HIV pandemic response) unmasks pandemic politics and Scott Ryan (long serving Liberal MP, Minister and current President of the Senate) takes on the challenges of modern politics.

Seeking Refuge in Fortress Europe

WHERE THE WATER ENDS is an expansive account of the refugee crisis and the people at its heart.

Around the world, forced migration doubled in the decade leading up to 2019. Over that time, the borders of the European Union became the world's deadliest frontier. More than 20,000 people have died or disappeared while attempting to gain entry since 2012, the year the EU was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Zoe Holman traces the story of this frontier from the perspective of migrants, mainly from the Middle East, via Greece, the cradle of European and 'western' civilisation, now itself marginalised within the EU and precariously hosting some 90,000 refugees.

FINDING YOUR INNER HERO

Uplifting! How do we find courage when climate change overwhelms us emotionally? Well, you read this! In this magical, often funny and deeply moving personal story, award-winning science reporter Jonica Newby explores how to navigate the emotional turmoil of climate change.

Featuring illuminating conversations with singer-songwriter Missy Higgins, comedians Charlie Pickering and Craig Reucassel and business leader Mike Cannon-Brookes, practical advice from psychological and scientific experts, incredible accounts from everyday heroes, plus inspiring stories from the climate strike kids, Beyond Climate Grief provides guidance and emotional sustenance to help shore up courage for the uncertainties ahead.

Smuggled: An Illegal History of Journeys to Australia

SYDNEY MECHANICS' SCHOOL OF ARTS - FREE EVENT

In person talk with Ruth Balint.

Ruth Balint will discuss the ideas behind her book SMUGGLED: An Illegal History of Journeys to Australia, tracing the fascinating story of people smuggling in Australia's migrant history, from the Second World War through to the present.

Nowadays, when we hear the term 'people smuggler', we immediately conjure images of mafia networks, organised crime, and mass deaths at sea. But people smuggling has a history in Australian migration that stretches well beyond the maritime borders of our nation, and a longer lineage than the recent refugee movements of the 21st century.

Co-authored by Ruth Balint and Julie Kalman and based on original research and revealing personal interviews, SMUGGLED marks the first attempt to detach the term 'people smuggler' from its pejorative connotations, and provides a compelling insight into a defining yet unexplored part of Australia's history. Ruth Balint is Associate Professor of History at the University of New South Wales. She teaches and writes about forced migration and refugees in the twentieth century.
