Abbey's Bookshop is a major Australian book retailer that began in 1968 and which has both an extensive online store and a physical bookstore in the centre of Sydney's CBD. The online store has a large, authoritative catalogue of millions of books, drawing in books from around the world (including non-English books) from large and small publishers and academic presses.
The physical bookshop located at 131 York Street, Sydney (and just across the road from the iconic Queen Victoria Building) is on two levels. The ground level features a large children's book section, Australia's largest in-store crime fiction collection, and a full range of fiction, history, science, philosophy and more. The upper level (accessible by elevators and stairs) holds Australia's largest foreign language and ESL (English as a Second Language) books department, Abbey's Language Book Centre. Also on Level 1 is the bookstore's speculative and fantasy books department, GALAXY Bookshop, which holds a huge range of titles across the science fiction and fantasy genres - and which has been a mecca for SFF fans over the decades.
Given Abbey's long history of bookselling in Australia, it has established a reputation as a premium-service book retailer with a tradition in assisting customers with finding specific titles they are seeking. As such, our booksellers are easily contactable via phone and email (where you can speak to a real person) and the bookshop is also a major book supplier to schools and libraries around the country. Abbey's has a widespread customer base through shipping books all over Australia and also being one of the few Australian bookstores that ships books globally.

It has long been tradition (since 1968) that no music is played in Abbey's Bookshop. Not because we don't like music, but simply because Eve and Ron Abbey were very fond of the respite from the outside world and contemplation that come with browsing in our bookshop.
If, however, you were wanting to listen to something while browsing and wanting a change from your usual, then we've compiled a few playlists that, like our curation of books, are sprinkled with the less familiar and swerve into laneways less-travelled.
