ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- Kate Delaney is on a girls' night out when she is propositioned by a sleazy guy in a Melbourne bar. A promising journalist with a sharp mind and keen tongue, she cuts him down to size and thinks no more of it. Meanwhile, her friends and partner are worried – where is she? As the days pass and the police investigate her disappearance, Kate is fighting to retain her sanity and survive…
A simple premise elevated by the gripping style and sense of pervasive fear, and although there is one of those coincidences at the end which isn't quite necessary, the well-drawn characters are certainly believable. I picked the book up and basically didn't put it down until the end! Lindy
ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- When Nina doesn’t return home from a weekend away with her boyfriend, her mother and family are both annoyed and increasingly concerned. Simon had pressured her into skipping out on her responsibilities to her mother's business, and unbeknownst to her friends or family, Nina only reluctantly agreed to go away to his family's Vermont cabin; she is realising that her golden boyfriend is not the young man everyone thinks he is.
As her mother Leeanne becomes more and more frantic, and disbelieving of the story Simon is telling, her behaviour borders on criminal. Simon's family are rich and used to being accommodated, so they start to play dirty themselves, to protect their only son. But is he telling the truth, and do they believe his stories, or are they more worried about their reputation than about the missing girl?

They are the children of the richest (and nastiest) pastoralist in the district, and they shouldn't have been on that particular road, so there is pressure to find the perpetrators, and Sydney detectives are called in. Gus has had dealings with the Kirkbride family, including a forbidden romance with the last surviving daughter, so it's far too personal a crime for him to leave alone even when the detectives come up with theories the pastoralist is pleased to support…
A compelling read, with a main character whose personal demons make him a very interesting study, and a well constructed narrative that catches the vastness of the western plains. Lindy

It has long been tradition (since 1968) that no music is played in Abbey's Bookshop. Not because we don't like music, but simply because Eve and Ron Abbey were very fond of the respite from the outside world and contemplation that come with browsing in our bookshop.
