What happens at midnight...

Illustrator and author Mitchell Toy took a moment to whip up this marvellous picture of Abbey's. Much of the impact of visual art rests on the capture of light and Mitchell Toy's illustrations take this to the sublime in his story, THE MIDNIGHT CITY. The dreamy, fantastical journey that his pyjamaed adventurers embark on after lights out are rendered across densely packed pages in luminous glows and highlights. Magical!

PICTURE BOOKS SHOWCASE

LINDY'S PICKS: FOUND

A simple but striking tale that can be read on different levels, the most obvious is of a little calf who is separated from her family, escapes from a man who forces her into a truck, wanders lost until she is once again reunited with her loving family. It doesn't take much for an adult reader to see that it is also a softened allegory for the Stolen Generations. However the text by the celebrated writer Bruce Pascoe is read, the limpid-eyed calf is beautifully rendered and the illustrations are vivid and celebrate the colours of the outback, with their strong earthy reds and ochres, and then the softer greens of watered country when the family is reunited.

The illustrator Charmaine Ledden-Lewis is a winner of an emerging Indigenous Illustrator award, and it will be a pleasure to see more of her work! As a postscript, the calf in the illustrations is modelled on photographs of a poddy calf (Ruth) cared for by one of our customers, whose daughter teaches the son of the illustrator! Lindy

LINDY'S PICKS: DIAMONDS

Never expect sweet and sentimental from Greder - his picturebooks are always complex, political, demanding and definitely not for little children. This one is no exception - it deals with the 'dirty diamond' trade.

A young girl watches her mother put on her diamond earrings, and asks questions. When sent to bed, she falls into a nightmare - the nightmare of diamond mining in areas of conflict. Through a series of textless illustrations, the process whereby the raw materials in a conflict zone end up as jewellery on a rich woman's ears is followed.

From the enslaved miners through corrupt businessmen and foreign dealers, the illustrations are in Greder's trademark smudged thick lines and swathes of expressionist dark-not-quite-black shading, with subtle touches of the occasional other colour, this is a book that doesn't need words. Thought provoking and powerful; and a reminder that there are many things overshadowed by current events, but nonetheless still happening... Lindy

LINDY'S PICKS: WILD ABOUT DADS

Sixteen different shapes and species of caring dads (and one who will probably never make it into a book on good parenting!) From the sandgrouse who soaks his feathers in water to take back to his nestlings, to the male chin-strap penguins who partner together to raise a chick; or the seahorse daddy who incubates the eggs in a special pouch, to the male wolves who care for and nurture their cubs - Dads come in all sorts, and set an example for their offspring to follow. Illustrated in Bunting's distinctive expressive style of graphic decoration, a lovely book for any human pup to give to their human daddy! Lindy

LINDY'S PICKS: KOOKABURRA

This is the new book in the excellent Nature Stories series of Australian wildlife (previous titles include Dingo; Emu; Big Red Kangaroo) that blends narrative with facts, aimed at younger primary school readers. Illustrated with great energy and realistic representations of the iconic bird, it follows a female Kookaburra as she and her mate defend their territory, hunt for food and raise chicks. A beautiful addition to the range; the illustrations are worth the price of the book alone! Lindy

LINDY'S PICKS: ELLIE'S DRAGON

I'm an unashamed fan of Bob Graham's sweet and non-judgemental creations. There's nothing saccharine about his picture books but they manage to capture real moments in a child's life with unerring gentleness. Ellie finds a dragon in the egg section of the supermarket when she is very little, takes him home and keeps him safe and fed. Adults never see him, but other children do.

As Ellie grows, so does Scratch but Ellie also becomes more distracted by the world around her, and slowly Scratch fades… Another classic from the master - and for others of his many fans, if they look carefully enough, they will see references to other characters from previous books. Lindy

LINDY'S PICKS: MOLLY & MAE

A book that can be read in many different ways, this is ostensibly about two little girls who meet on a train journey and strike up an instant friendship. Through the length of the trip, they play together, annoy others, argue, apologise and strengthen their bonds. Exactly how friendships fare through life…

With evocative and gentle illustrations by the multi-award winning Freya Blackwood, this is a book to show youngsters the need for -and rewards of - tolerance and understanding. But it's also a book you could give your own best and longest friends if they are in need of a pick-me-up no matter their age! Lindy

LINDY'S PICKS: SNEAKY SHADOWS

This is sheer fun and delight! The reader is asked to guess the shadow portrayed on the page. First we start with something simple: two penguins. Then a giraffe. But then it gets trickier and trickier - that camel is really a llama carrying jelly on its back (to improve its posture) and that bat is really Toby the dog hiding behind umbrellas to practise his yoga - and so it goes. Absurdity rules! Imaginative silliness (and great endpapers!) Lindy

LINDY'S PICKS: NOT CUTE

A quote from Aesop ("the stubborn listen to nobody's advice and become a victim of their own delusions") is the coda to this quirky tale of a Quokka who is sick and tired of being cute. He tries on all sorts of disguises to persuade others that he is NOT cute - to little effect and great merriment, until a misunderstanding gets quite out of hand…

Bunting is rapidly carving out his niche of subversive humour (often with sly jokes in the endpapers), with expressive illustrations that are simple but beautifully designed and convey a great deal of feeling. Another winner from the man who brought us Mopoke and other wonderful picture books! Lindy

BOOKS FOR YOUNG ADULTS

Lindy's Picks: THE GREAT GODDEN

As long as they can remember, the narrator's family have spent summer at the coast in an impractical house built by their Victorian ancestor. It's a mad whirl of activity and freedom, spent with adult cousins; but one summer the Godden boys are dumped in their midst - sullen Hugo and irresistible Kit - and everything changes. Kit charms everyone, and the narrator (un-named, and gender unspecified) is not the only person to fall madly in love with him. As the holiday unfolds, the family dynamics shift and the golden boy turns out to have a very black heart indeed… A finely told coming-of-age novel with a captivating voice; I enjoyed this very much indeed! Lindy

Lindy's Picks: The Secret Library of Hummingbird House

Hattie is struggling with her parent's separation, particularly the rule that says she can't speak with the parent she isn't staying with in their week-about arrangements. There are a lot of rules in Hattie's life, from letting her little sister come first in everything all the time, to school rules ordered by a restrictive principal. When the dilapidated mansion near her old family house is threatened with demolition, Hattie finds the strength within to fight for what she believes in - helped by meeting a sad and lonely young girl who is living in the past.

A lovely story full of emotional reality, with a nicely turned bit of time slippage adding interest. Upper primary readers should enjoy this. Lindy

Lindy's Picks: Echo Mountain

Set in the Depression in rural America, a family who once lived a comfortable life find themselves eking out a precarious living on Echo Mountain, They are warned not to go to the peak, but as staying fed and warm takes up all their efforts anyway, there's no need.

Narrated by the second child, Ellie, who has taken to the lifestyle change with practicality, curiosity and good grace (unlike her mother and older sister who mourn the loss of their town life) their existence is even more threatened when Ellie's father meets with a terrible accident - one she bears the brunt of, as well as the blame. It means she takes on more responsibility, but even the bravest of us needs support…

I adore Wolk's novels, which treat readers with calm sophistication about big issues, with their strong female characters on the cusp of teenage learning how to navigate life and change and even when bad things happen, finding the resilience to manage and grow. Lindy
