JESSICA TOWNSEND'S NEVERMOOR SERIES

HOLLOWPOX is the third book in Jessica Townsend's award-winning series.

Morrigan Crow and her friends have survived their first year as proud scholars of the elite Wundrous Society, helped bring down the nefarious Ghastly Market, and proven themselves loyal to Unit 919. Now Morrigan faces a new, exciting challenge: to master the mysterious Wretched Arts of the Accomplished Wundersmith, and control the power that threatens to consume her.

But a strange illness has taken hold of Nevermoor, turning its peaceable Wunimals into mindless, vicious unnimals on the hunt. As victims of the Hollowpox multiply, panic spreads. And with the city she loves in a state of fear, Morrigan quickly realises it is up to her to find a cure for the Hollowpox, even if it will put her - and the rest of Nevermoor - in more danger than ever before...

THE ENERGETIC ALEXA MOSES INTRODUCES...

A sparkling, fun story for 8-12 year old people by Alexa Moses. Grab a copy and enjoy the musings of Michaela Mason as she tackles her BIG LIST!

"I've been making lists ever since I could write. It relaxes me. By writing my worries down, I feel as if I'm removing them from my mind and leaving them on the paper. My secret worry list is the big boss of lists. Right now, there are 23 worries on it."

New school. New town. 23 worries. Can Michaela Mason handle it?

DANDY AND DAZZA

Mike Dumbleton's charming book is about two quite different dogs, DANDY & DAZZA. Dandy was a 'Best in Show' sort of hound. Dazza was a rough and tumble sort of mongrel. Can these very different dogs ever be good friends? Age range 3 to 6.

PICTURE BOOKS SHOWCASE

LINDY'S PICKS: THE WAY OF THE WEEDY SEADRAGON

Another splendid narrative non-fiction book from CSIRO publishing! This tells the story of the Weedy Seadragon, a fish found along Australia's southern coastline. A poor swimmer but a beautiful dancer, a master of camouflage and inhabitant of kelp forests, a creature where the male broods the eggs - in short, a fascinating animal! Gorgeous illustrations capture the watery world and gracefulness of the dragons. More facts at the back of the book, including simple actions to protect these species - and a good glossary as well. Highly recommended for primary school readers! Lindy

LINDY'S PICKS: PLANTASTIC!

A to Z of Australian Plants

Years ago I volunteered at the loan centre of the Queensland Museum, and this is exactly the sort of book we would have easily used in constructing our loans! Which is the highest praise I can personally give for any non-fiction children's book!

Twenty-six native plants are featured on double page spreads. Rather beautiful and accurately rendered watercolour illustrations on clean white pages complement the excellent text which gives a good amount of information. Each plant has a fabulous fact in a separate box of text and also a simple activity connected with the plant. There is also an excellent glossary, and the endpapers cleverly illustrate botanical terms. A wonderful book to give to up-and-coming botanists, as it does not talk down to them, but enthuses with the delights of the multiplicity of our native flora! Lindy

LINDY'S PICKS: WITH A LITTLE KELP FROM OUR FRIENDS

The Secret Life of Seaweed: History, Culture and Environment

A big beautiful book that explains the importance of seaweed.

Lots of facts simply and entertainingly presented - everything from what seaweed is and its different varieties to how it's used by different cultures around the world, medicinal properties and unique features, marine permaculture to the threats of global warming and much more besides. There are suggested activities, glossary and inspiring (not frightening!) ways to make a difference in protecting the world.

A fascinating book enhanced by glowing and softly coloured oil painting and pastel illustrations, which will open the eyes of any reader to the wonders and usefulness of this intriguing species! Lindy

LINDY'S PICKS: HELLO AND WELCOME

Joyful and welcoming, this fine book for primary age children is an invitation to learn from and celebrate Indigenous culture and diversity. The simple text has non-forced rhymes and reiterates all the things to respect and be thankful to, from Father Sky and Mother Earth, through to the Elders who share their wisdom and love. Colourful and expressive illustrations showcase the author's Kamilaroi indigenous heritage and contribute to the big-hearted inclusiveness of this Welcome to Country. Lindy

LINDY'S PICKS: BACKYARD BUGS

If you know a pre-schooler who is captivated by insects and micro-creatures, then this colourful and uncomplicated book will be the perfect thing!

There's lot to see in the backyard, from the ant that marches up a tree to the ladybird that lands upon a sleeve. An emphasis on active verbs and gentle rhymes mark out the text, but it is the bright illustrations that bring extra pleasure. The critters are rendered fairly naturalistically and placed against abstract Indigenous patterning - a very sweet mix! Lindy

LINDY'S PICKS: WHERE'S BABY ELEPHANT

The hidden baby animal is a standard trope in children's books, but what sets this one apart is the cleverness of the illustrations which change from one kind of animal to a different one.

Each right hand page folds out three times, revealing another set of animals each time - so though the book might only have five pages as such, the flaps contain twelve sets of animals and their babies altogether. So a lion and his cubs unfold to be a hedgehog and her hoglets, which in turn unfold to an orangutan and her infant!

A fun book to share with children aged 3 to 5. Lindy

BOOKS FOR YOUNG ADULTS

Lindy's Picks: A FAIRYTALE REVOLUTION series

These are fairytales rewritten and given contemporary relevance (and afterwords), by important and well-regarded authors known for their strong feminist principles and distinctive literary styles. Heavily text-based though presented in a classic children's picturebook format, accompanied by illustrations in a classic silhouette style by Laura Barrett (and in the case of Cinderella Liberator, using Arthur Rackham illustrations). Best for older readers rather than little children, but thoroughly recommended! Lindy

Lindy's Picks: The Secret Library of Hummingbird House

Hattie is struggling with her parent's separation, particularly the rule that says she can't speak with the parent she isn't staying with in their week-about arrangements. There are a lot of rules in Hattie's life, from letting her little sister come first in everything all the time, to school rules ordered by a restrictive principal. When the dilapidated mansion near her old family house is threatened with demolition, Hattie finds the strength within to fight for what she believes in - helped by meeting a sad and lonely young girl who is living in the past.

A lovely story full of emotional reality, with a nicely turned bit of time slippage adding interest. Upper primary readers should enjoy this. Lindy

Lindy's Picks: Echo Mountain

Set in the Depression in rural America, a family who once lived a comfortable life find themselves eking out a precarious living on Echo Mountain, They are warned not to go to the peak, but as staying fed and warm takes up all their efforts anyway, there's no need.

Narrated by the second child, Ellie, who has taken to the lifestyle change with practicality, curiosity and good grace (unlike her mother and older sister who mourn the loss of their town life) their existence is even more threatened when Ellie's father meets with a terrible accident - one she bears the brunt of, as well as the blame. It means she takes on more responsibility, but even the bravest of us needs supportÂ…

I adore Wolk's novels, which treat readers with calm sophistication about big issues, with their strong female characters on the cusp of teenage learning how to navigate life and change and even when bad things happen, finding the resilience to manage and grow. Lindy
