PICTURE BOOKS SHOWCASE

LINDY'S PICKS: THE ROCK
FROM THE SKY

Fans of Klassen's deadpan style are in for a treat with his newest offering! A turtle and an armadillo (and a snake) - all wearing hats of course - are in the perfect spot. Or is it? What is that rock doing? And what's that behind you?! With lots of repetition and sly wit, and told over five instalments, this humorous story is one where nothing much happens, until it does. Klassen's deceptively simple illustrative style is getting better and better with each book, his deft use of a monochromatic sepia-toned palette is sophisticated and repays close contemplation - and there are very few illustrators to equal his ability to convey expression in his characters' eyes! One as much for the adults as it is for the kids! Lindy

LINDY'S PICKS: WOMBAT

The latest in the excellent Walker Nature Storybooks series, that depicts an Australian animal (Emu/Dingo/Koala/Big Red Kangaroo and others) through its day and in its habitat. As with previous titles, two different fonts are used - one for the story, one for the facts, which combine to make an educational narrative with a dash of drama (without sacrificing accuracy). Illustrations are done in pencil and watercolour with earthy tones as befits the subject and her environment, and are realistically handled. A worthy addition to the series aimed at primary aged readers. Lindy

LINDY'S PICKS: A HUMAN
FOR KINGSLEY

Kingsley, a low slung and long-coated canine of indeterminate breed, decides to own a human. Certainly not a decision to be taken at all lightly, because there are many things that need to be considered. He tries out a variety of them, before he meets one that intrigues him, and follows her home. But is she really the right one for him? A charming tale with a rather adorable dog and a feisty young lass - and of course, a happy ending! Illustrations full of movement and small details that add to the wit of the story. Lindy

LINDY'S PICKS: A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM

A lovely retelling of Shakespeare's comedy, which keeps the complicated story simple enough for young readers. Puck relates how his master Oberon gave him a task, but how in the execution of it, Puck caused a great deal of mischief, but eventually put all to rights again. The illustrations are by Jane Ray, and her exuberant, colourful and decorative pages are a delight to look upon! It takes special talent to illustrate a story set in the night-time, and make it full of light and magic. Splendid! Lindy

LINDY'S PICKS: DON'T FORGET

Nuggets of gentle wisdom are peppered throughout this warm and comforting picturebook. Featuring a diverse array of children engaged in everyday activities, the text encourages the reader to don't forget things ranging from the practical (like wearing socks that fit or to brush your teeth) to the thoughtful (don't forget to share or to lend a hand when you can) to the philosophical (don't forget it's good to be alone sometimes). Enhanced by joyful illustrations in muted and pastel shades, this is a book to give to the youngster in your life - or to your best friend! Lindy

LINDY'S PICKS: WINNER WINNER
BIN CHICKEN DINNER

Bin Chicken is back! Our plucky Ibis heroine strides through the indignities heaped upon her, looking for food. In the big city, there's plenty to choose from - if the other birds will share! Chased away from various delicacies by more pushy birds, she stumbles upon a schoolyard and all the pickings it contains - too many for her appetite, so in a forgiving mood, she shares her bounty. Told in rhyming text with exuberant illustrations, it also contains a nice shout out to the Big City Birds citizen science project coordinated by Dr John Martin in the depiction of wingtag 1306. BOOKS FOR YOUNG ADULTS

Lindy's Picks:
Henry Hamlet's Heart

Henry really doesn't know what he wants to do after Year 12.

It's the last semester, and while he has always been a top achiever in his grammar school, with a tight bunch of friends, and a good reputation with the teachers, he feels like an awkward fraud.

And then there's Len - effortlessly stylish best friend Len - who likes who he likes, and it looks like he likes Henry... Who is not at all sure of his own feelings for Len, or what it means in the grander scheme of life!

Full of lively characters and crackling dialogue, this is a totally charming story about finding your way through all the obstacles of being on the cusp of adulthood, making mistakes and making amends. Lindy

Lindy's Picks: Can't Say it
Went to Plan

Schoolies week, and individually Samira, Zoe and Dahlia all have plans.

They've been looking forward to a week of fun in the sun, partying and hanging out with their friends. But Zoe's parents decide at the last moment she can't go; Samira's boyfriend dumps her; and Dahlia who suffers from anxiety isn't sure she should be going.

Each girl is about to have the week of their lives, but it won't be at all as they dreamed and schemed, and it will set them up for what lies ahead...

Three perspectives means the story is spread out, but it is covers a range of issues relevant to the young women, and makes for a refreshing read. Lindy

Lindy's Picks: Off the Map

Gardner is a master at chronicling the emotional life of young almost-men - the awkward phase where they're not boys but not yet adult, either.

This splendid collection of short stories, linked by being set in a rural town, follows a number of teens who go to the same schools and know each other tangentially.

Some of the stories have a slightly surreal element about them (the opening tale is about a boy who discovers a website that has All The Answers) some are set in the bush outside the town, others have the protagonists observing the actions of adults around them. All of them are about discovery, whether of their own or others' emotions and capabilities.

These finely written stories range from funny to profound, and each is a small masterpiece of perception well worth reading. Lindy
