Over a five-year period, in Tongan waters, photographer and filmmaker Jem Cresswell took more than 11,000 images of one of nature's largest mammals – the humpback whale.
In Giants, Cresswell selects the most striking of these images to document the awe-inspiring behaviours of these majestic creatures.
ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- Sometimes a book comes in that just takes your breath away, and travel photographer Richard I'Anson's splendid volume had a number of staff drooling over it (metaphorically – no books were harmed in this review!). It is an oversized book full of astounding images of the Antarctica and some of the sub-Antarctic islands. Landscapes, wildlife, birds, ice and the occasional sign that humans have been there in the forms of rusting steel sheets and abandoned buildings – all photographed with an artist's eye (icefloes and fields particularly lend themselves to abstraction). The bird photography is particularly clear and striking, but there's not one image that doesn't make you pause in contemplation... A special and desirable book indeed! Lindy
