YOUR DONATION HELPS GIFT CULTURALLY MEANINGFUL BOOKS TO REMOTE COMMUNITIES
As a bookshop, we see firsthand the joy and excitement that reading can bring. We know how a great story, history or biography can take you away and, almost by osmosis, open the doors to knowledge of yourself and of the outside world. This knowledge gives you options and an understanding that there are many different ways to live a life and contribute to your community. That's why Abbey's supports Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF).
ILF HISTORY
ILF was founded in 2004 by Suzy Wilson, a former teacher and education consultant who owns Riverbend Books in Brisbane. ILF is a not-for-profit who provides remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities with the literacy resources they request to support their aspirations for Community and Culture.
ILF PROGRAMS
ILF relies on the generosity of donors, with no government funding for their programs. This enables their work to remain dynamic and Community-led.
BOOK SUPPLY
ILF gift new and culturally appropriate books to remote Communities where access to libraries and bookstores is challenging.
BOOK BUZZ
An early literacy program to develop familiarity and engagement with books for children under five.
COMMUNITY PUBLISHING
ILF supports Communities to write and illustrate their own stories in languages of their choice. Recognising the intergenerational impact of Indigenous authored and created books, ILF provides one of the highest royalty rates in Australian publishing to its creators and authors.
