When the nine officers of the Clare City Police Department learned their town's only doughnut shop was closing for good, they sprang into action. The 113-year-old bakery was an icon and needed to be protected and served! Besides, there were already 11 empty stores in the three blocks of downtown Clare, Michigan. So, with no idea how to make doughnuts, run a business or where to start, the officers stepped up to save the doughnuts and, in doing so, revived a small town. They expected to simply keep the bakery open, but from day one, the bakery business exploded. They garnered national and international media attention, created three other locations, nearly went bankrupt, and came back stronger than ever. This book is more than an American success story, it's a lesson for fresh marketing ideas and how civic-minded people can make a difference in any town. Want to know how they did it? This is their story.

Reviews for Cops & Doughnuts: The amazing story of a police department, a bakery, and the comeback of a small town

This is the inspirational true story of nine magnificent members of the Clare Police Department who protected an historic landmark bakery and continue to serve their community with kindness and some of the best doughnuts this side of the Milky Way. It's is a wonderful read, and why wouldn't it be? These guys are some of the wackiest and smartest you'll ever encounter. Check this book out and make your way to one of their bakeries. But not too fast. Some of these guys are still cops. -Tom Daldin, Host of Under the Radar Michigan We knew them as a competent and community-minded police department, but everyone was shocked when members of the Clare Police Department bought and saved the Clare City Bakery. The irony was obvious and they played that with humor and learn-as-you-go business acumen. Clare has grown and prospered from their success and involvement. Plus we got darn fine donuts. -Rick Mills, Editor of the Morning Sun When I was a boy, I often walked down to the Clare City Bakery to score a glazed doughnut or a cream-filled long john. Years later, I heard the bakery was closing, joining so many other storefronts. But wait! Nine local policemen stepped up to turn the business around and revive the town itself. Grab a cup of coffee and a doughnut and prepare for a fun and inspiring read. -Tim White, PhD, Brigadier General USAF (Ret)
