The moment you've dreamed of your entire life, standing atop the podium, medal around your neck, national anthem playing should be pure euphoria. So why do so many elite athletes describe the weeks that follow as the darkest of their careers?

""The Podium Hangover"" exposes the hidden epidemic plaguing elite athletics: post-competition depression. The authors reveal how the very drive that propels athletes to greatness becomes their greatest vulnerability after victory. Through groundbreaking research and intimate interviews with Olympic champions, world record holders, and professional athletes, this book uncovers why 35% of elite competitors experience severe depression within months of their biggest wins.

The problem isn't the loss, it's the win. When your entire identity revolves around chasing a goal, what happens when you finally catch it? Athletes describe feeling hollow, purposeless, and terrifyingly lost despite achieving everything they'd worked toward. The podium, meant to be the pinnacle, becomes the cliff.

This book is not another sports psychology book filled with generic advice. ""The Podium Hangover"" provides a revolutionary framework for understanding and overcoming post-victory depression. The book lays it out for you to discover practical strategies for rebuilding identity beyond athletic achievement, maintaining mental wellness during career transitions, and creating sustainable fulfillment that extends far beyond any medal.

Whether you're a competing athlete, coach, sports psychologist, or parent of an elite performer, this book offers essential tools for navigating the psychological complexities of high-level competition. Learn how to transform the podium from an ending into a beginning.

Don't let victory become the enemy of wellbeing. Discover how to win at competition and at life. Your mental health deserves the same training intensity as your physical performance.

Reviews for The Podium Hangover: Elite Athlete Mental Health After the Win, Beat the Post Competition Crash, Rebuild Identity, and Train for a Life Beyond the Medal

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for elite athletes Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2025 I think this is a great book that seriously deals with the mental health of successful athletes. I have never come across anything like it before, which would have specialized in the ""aftercare"" of athletes who have experienced serious success. It contains excellent chapters, each of which conveys the desire to help. In my opinion, it could be extended to speakers, musicians, actors and actresses or anyone who achieves success whose effect is equal to that of certain drugs, as the book says: ""Winning is like a drug!"" This is a very important topic that needs to be discussed, because successful people may not be able to process it on their own, or may have a very difficult time doing so, once those golden years have passed, and this is where this book comes in, which I believe can really help. I congratulate the authors on the choice of topic and this great book, which I wholeheartedly recommend to everyone involved in this problem. 5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading Beyond the Medal Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2025 The Podium Hangover tackles a hidden truth in sports: the emotional crash that often follows victory. Drawing on stories from athletes like Michael Phelps and Simone Biles, it reveals how identity loss, anxiety, and depression can strike even at the peak of success. What makes it stand out is the balance of honesty and hope. Alongside raw testimonies, the book offers practical strategies for recovery, resilience, and rebuilding life after sport. Inspiring, eye-opening, and deeply human... this is a must-read for athletes and anyone facing big life transitions.
