It was easy for Elizabeth. She married the man she loved, bore him two children and made a home for him which was the envy of their friends.

It was harder for Ruth. She married Elizabeth’s son and then found that, somehow, she could never quite measure up ...

Isolation, deceit and betrayal fill the gaps between the two individual women and between their different worlds.

In this complex thriller, Philippa Gregory deploys all her insight into what women want and what women fear, as Ruth confronts the shifting borders of her own sanity.

Laying bare the comfortable conventions of rural England, this spine-tingling story pulses with suspense until the whiplash double-twist of the denouement.

Philippa Gregory was an established historian and writer when she discovered her interest in the Tudor period and wrote the novel The Other Boleyn Girl which was made into a TV drama, and a major film. Now, six novels later, she is looking at the family that preceded the Tudors: the magnificent Plantaganets, a family of complex rivalries, loves, and hatreds. She lives with her family on a small farm in Yorkshire where she keeps horses, hens and ducks. Alix is a founding member of the Fitzrovia Radio Hour and has performed with the comedy group in theatres across the UK, including at Shakespeare’s Globe. Also a prolific voice artist, she has narrated a number of audiobooks including Victoire, Three Daughters of Eve, Butterfly on the Storm and In Defence of Witches, and performs in several video games including Pillars of the Earth, Q.U.B.E. 2, Year of Rain and Ravenbound. Alix’s voice work can also be heard in the feature film The Pod Generation, starring Emilia Clarke.

Reviews for The Little House

'Fiendishly plotted ... this is Gregory at her most chillingly convincing.' -- Cosmopolitan 'This brilliant psychological chiller ... is utterly, nail-nibblingly plausible. You will relish its explosive climax and be gripped through to its final, superb, double-twist finish.' -- Daily Mail 'Insidiously gripping.' -- The Independent 'This story of a woman's descent into domestic abuse hasn't lost any relevance since its 1997 publication. Narrator Alix Dunmore nails each character with her varying pitch and English accents. Young Ruth is struggling in her news radio career and in the early years of marriage to the overconfident and spoiled Patrick. Eventually, she's drawn out of their Bristol flat and ensconced in the little house down the lane from his parents' manor. In a formal tone and accent, Patrick's mother, Elizabeth, welcomes her ... In this slow burn of a thriller Ruth's choices are stripped away so slowly that she hardly notices until she's in over her head. The anguish in Dunmore's voice turns to anger and chilling resolve, bringing Ruth to a cruel end.' -- AudioFile Magazine
