Why This Book? I wrote this book as a personal quest for answers and to help others facing similar challenges. As an adult on the Asperger's spectrum who lived most of my life undiagnosed, I experienced constant pressure, emotional strain, and a demanding work environment that gradually took a toll on my health and sleep. Despite leaving the stressful job, the sleep problems persisted. Later, after realizing I was on the spectrum, I identified sleep disturbances as one of the most persistent and damaging issues faced by individuals with Asperger's Syndrome.
As a researcher with relevant experience and academic training, I combined my scientific background with personal experience to explore the neurological, biological, and sensory factors behind these sleep challenges. This book aims to explain why they occur, drawing on evidence-based research, rather than offering generic sleep advice. It emphasizes that common methods-like relaxation techniques or routine adjustments-often fail because the problem runs much deeper.
How to Use This Book The book is divided into two main parts:
Part One (Chapters 1-4):
Explains the biological, neurological, and sensory reasons behind sleep difficulties in individuals with Asperger's Syndrome, including aspects of brain chemistry, genetics, and the nervous system. Part Two (from Chapter 5 onward):
Provides practical and science-based strategies, techniques, and approaches to help improve sleep quality.
You can start from the scientific explanations or jump directly to the solutions-whichever suits your needs best.
In essence, this book combines my research and lived experience to provide a clearer understanding of why sleep is such a complex issue for people with Asperger's, and how it can be managed through informed, evidence-based approaches.
