Irritable bowel syndrome refers to a functional disorder which is characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits without any evidence of structural abnormalities. Gastroenterology also deals with the management of medical conditions that cause bleeding in the digestive tract. These conditions may include diverticulosis, gastrointestinal tumors and varices.
