"Exclusion and expulsion of black children from schools is endemic in the US and the UK. This book takes a long hard look at the two countries and uncovers what they can learn from each other in their approaches to tackling this problem. The material in the book is the result of extensive work with educators, researchers and scholars working in the area of exclusion in the US and the UK. Different approaches have met with varying degrees of success, but all can be learnt from. The book looks at ""manhood training"" developed in the US, as well as African Immersions Schools, and in the UK it examines studies of best practice, and research into the ramifications and costs to society of excluding children."

Reviews for Educating Our Black Children: New Directions and Radical Approaches

'In his latest book Majors, together with other authors in the field, dissects the experience of young black boys inside British schools. The book paints a bleak picture.' - The Guardian 'This book represents an excellent analysis of the negative results that colour-blind policies bring and it can be seen as an opportunity to learn from successful policies and practices ... The book is of paramount importance for all those interested in education in general and for those who seek to understand the genesis and consequences, the how and the why of the huge underachievement and the exclusion of ethnic minorities, mostly black males.' - Intercultural Education 'This book represents an excellent analysis of the negative results that colour-blind policies bring and it can be seen as an opportunity to learn from successful policies and practices ...
