Nothing is what it seems in this year’s Early Harvest anthology ...

This collection features double-cross plotlines, diabolical survival scenarios, and the very best stories dreamed up by young authors for an audience of their peers.

Fifteen young editors, mentored by children’s author Rhiannon Williams and publishing industry professionals, have assembled a collection of betrayal and survival fiction over a yearlong writing project.

The collection includes fifteen intrepid tales and poems written by young Australian writers between the ages of 8 and 12, alongside a story by bestselling author Alice Pung.

PROGRAM DETAILS

Two-Faced Tales is the lucky thirteenth book created through 100 Story Building’s Early Harvest youth publishing program. In this program, a panel of young editors, ages 11 and 12, are assembled every year to select the book’s theme, commission the artwork, curate the collection and make all the creative decisions involved in putting the book together, making it Australia's ONLY publication edited and written by kids for kids.

100 Story Building books are edited by energetic and diverse panel of young people, drawn from eight schools across Melbourne who participate in 100 Story Building’s annual Early Harvest publishing program.  Each year, the editors at 100 Story Building create Australia’s only fiction book that is written and edited by kids for kids. All stories, poems, and other content in the book have been carefully selected by 11- and 12-year-olds, who curate the collection based on the interests and sensibilities of their age group. Over 12 intensive weeks, the young editors draft fun extra features, pore over hundreds of submissions, edit stories, create illustration briefs, brainstorm content and make a million difficult decisions to produce a book that showcases the creative work of their peers.  100 Story Building is Victoria’s home of storymaking and creative discovery for children and young people. Our imagination-driven literacy programs empower children to take creative risks, embrace mistakes, follow their passions and experience the joy of expression. Alice Pung: Contributing Guest Author Alice was born in Footscray, Victoria, a month after her parents Kuan and Kien arrived in Australia. Alice grew up in Footscray and Braybrook, and changed high schools five times - almost once every year! These experiences have shaped her as a writer because they taught her how to pay attention to the quiet children and young adults that others might overlook or miss. Alice Pung’s first book, Unpolished Gem, is an Australian bestseller which won the Australian Book Industry Newcomer of the Year Award and was shortlisted in the Victorian and NSW Premiers’ Literary awards. Alice’s next book, Her Father’s Daughter, won the Western Australia Premier’s Award for Non-Fiction and was shortlisted for the Victorian and NSW Premiers’ Literary awards and the Queensland Literary Awards. Alice’s YA book Laurinda won the NSW Premiers Award Ethel Turner Prize in 2016, Alice’s most recent adult novel, One Hundred Days, was shortlisted for the Miles Franklin and Voss literary awards. Alice also edited the collections Growing Up Asian in Australia and My First Lesson. Her writing for children include the Marly books from the Our Australian Girl series, When Granny Came to Stay, and the bilingual children’s picture book, illustrated by Sher Rill Ng, Be Careful, Xiao Xin! Alice will be writing an exclusive never-before-published short story on the theme of Betrayal and Survival for this year’s book!
