ENCHANTED LION

A self-important but good-hearted toad, with an ample amount of self-love, discovers his love for others in this entertaining, award-winning picture book originally published in Germany.

Truman Toad lives in a cozy little apartment, all by himself. In fact, he loves his own company so much that he keeps a giant mirror nearby so that he’s never too far from his reflection. After all, who better than himself to spend all his time with!

One day, Truman wakes up from the most wonderful dream about the most wonderful hug—and he’s determined to make it come true. The quest for the perfect hug has begun... but nothing seems quite perfect enough to Truman: the hugs he gets from his animal friends are too long or too slippery, too soft or too hard, too wild or too gentle. Truman is discouraged. Will he ever find the perfect hug?

Charming, quirky, filled with heart and wholly one of a kind, Oren Lavie’s story, coupled with Anke Kuhl’s delightfully spirited illustrations, will make readers of all ages laugh—and make them think about letting go, letting others in, and the power of hugs!

Reviews for Truman Toad and the Quest for the Perfect Hug

STARRED REVIEW! ? ""Kuhl's visuals are an engrossing mix of William Steig's and Arnold Lobel's illustrations, with hijinks and hilarity apparent in the ridiculous assortment of different animals: a squirrel and a butterfly eagerly embracing; a snail and a mouse tentatively eyeing each other. Lavie's prose is perfect in pitch, tone, and phrasing, as when an overexcited Truman sets off 'with the special grace of a toad.' A warm embrace of both story and image, this lesson in appreciating what you have delights in every way."" * Kirkus Reviews * STARRED REVIEW! ? ""A self-obsessed protagonist makes narcissism absolutely ribbiting in this gaily cantankerous picture book... In elegant line work, saturated washes, and marvelously emotive characters that feel like a cross between the work of Arnold Lobel and James Stevenson, Kuhl follows Truman through a parade of discarded snuggles with a menagerie of acquaintances-each hug a comic gem of interspecies awkwardness... For anyone seeking their own perfect something, this irresistibly funny title hints, the answer may lie in embracing imperfection."" * Publishers Weekly * I have decided that for the rest of my life, all I want to do is upload Truman Toad photos onto my blog. I want to make it my life’s work. I want to wallpaper my world in all things Truman Toad... I just love everything about this book SO much! -- Betsy Bird * A Fuse #8 Production (A School Library Journal blog) * Both heartfelt and irreverent, with a charming protagonist whose confidence is perhaps unearned but the source of many laughs. The exaggerated figures all underscore the story's gleeful silliness, while Truman... is a bit like a chaotic combination of Lobel's Frog and Toad... The sentence structure and vocabulary put this in the reach of newly (or almost) solo readers, who can also find humor in parsing out the differences between Truman's interpretations of events and the illustrations of what is actually going on. * The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books * This story's tongue-in-cheek storytelling, greatly enhanced by its gorgeous and goofy artwork, reminded me of... Steig and his particular blend of slyness and silliness... A sweet, reflective lesson on letting go of perfection and learning to live in the moment, celebrating the gifts life brings. Recommended for kids ages 4-8 and their adults who enjoy quirky, intricate, and slightly wordy picture books. * Youth Services Book Review * HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! ""Utterly and completely delightful-just like the perfect hug!"" -- Kristine, Bookseller * Buttonwood Books and Toys (Cohasset, MA) * HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! ""There is not a shortage of books about hugs out there, but Truman just might take the cake! ... With wit and charm, Lavie and Kuhl's words and illustrations work together to deliver a book that generates both comfort and surprise. I loved it!"" -- Clarkie Doster * Book Party *
