"Hugh Stowell Scott was an English author who wrote under the name Henry Seton Merriman. He was born on May 9, 1862, and died on November 19, 1903. The Sowers, his best-known book, was published thirty times in the UK. He was born in Newcastle upon Tyne and worked as an underwriter at Lloyd's of London. After that, he started traveling and writing books, many of which became great hits. Scott went to India as a tourist in 1877 and 1878, and the setting for his 1896 book Flotsam was India. He really loved traveling, and he did a lot of it with his friend and fellow author Stanley J. Weyman. On June 19, 1889, Scott married Ethel Frances Hall, who was born in 1865 and died in 1943. They didn't have any kids. Scott was surprisingly humble and quiet for his personality. He died at Melton, Suffolk, in 1903 of appendicitis. He was 41 years old. In his will, Scott gave £5,000 to Evelyn Beatrice Hall, who was his sister-in-law and a fellow writer. Hall is best known for writing The Friends of Voltaire, a biography. Scott described the legacy as a ""token of my gratitude for her continued assistance and literary advice, without which I should never have been able to have made a living by my pen."""
