ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- When I first saw the title and the silhouetted dog on the cover I did think this might lean to the cosier end of the crime fiction spectrum, whereas my preferences are towards grittier crime writing. But no, Simon Rowell writes tight police procedurals - this is the third book in his Zoe Mayer series. In fact, I found this very hard to put down as the mystery gathered pace and channels of investigation were followed - consequently pushing into the wee hours when it should have been lights out.
Detective Sergeant Zoe Mayer presents as a focused, no-nonsense investigator however Harry, her support golden retriever, is keenly attuned to her state of well-being. Mayer suffers PTSD yet with Harry she is able to continue in her role - which does occasionally raise eyebrows and draw comment from co-workers and others. Melbourne and surrounds are the setting for this story of an alleged fraud and double homicide. An engaging and satisfying mystery. Craig
A thrilling police procedural set in Mount Macedon by one of the rising stars of Australian crime writing.
After gunshots echo through the summer night on Mount Macedon, Detective Sergeant Zoe Mayer and her loyal service dog Harry race to the summit at first light. What they find looks like a grisly murder-suicide- an alleged fraudster named Piers Johnson, and his lawyer Antony Peterson, both dead from bullet wounds, a gun lying nearby.
Something about the scene doesn't stack up. There are plenty of suspects, but no one seems to be telling the truth. Zoe's instincts are ignited, as the pressure to find and charge the culprit becomes intense. And that's when Peterson's teenage daughter Sarah is snatched off the street. This is Mayer's toughest assignment yet - a murderous conspiracy of greed, deceit and violence.
