With a previous career in nursing and family history of Alzheimer's disease, Irene Smith believed she had taken steps to look after her health. However, in 2012 she had an initial experience of cognitive decline and faced the reality that mainstream medicine could offer no help. A journey to fend off the symptoms began until they became worse in 2018 and she feared she would lose this battle.

Fortunately, she found a way back. Irene shares her experience of cognitive issues, the discovery that she carries one copy of the APoE4 gene, a recognised risk factor for Alzheimer's disease, and what she discovered from the protocol that aided her recovery.

The A Word brings a message of hope, highlighting much is possible with some lifestyle changes, and learning the best ways to take care of ourselves as individuals and our world.

Reviews for The A Word: Living in Harmony with my Alzheimer Risk

"This is a must-read book for anyone noticing any cognitive changes and wanting to take control of their own cognitive health. So many readers will identify with the author's initial dismissal of symptoms and I hope this spurs the reader into taking earlier action. This is such a moving story of one woman's sheer grit and determination to research and find her own solutions; one can only feel gratitude that she paved the way and is giving us the benefit of her learning across her health journey. As documented here, until recently there has been so little support for anyone wanting to take responsibility for their own health. We're sleepwalking into a health crisis, but this book gives so many tips for how to detox your world and live a healthier lifestyle, I'm sure it will help and encourage many people and not just those with cognitive symptoms, but with all manner of chronic conditions. Lindsey Byrne, The Cognitive Health Coach I loved this book- inspirational & empowering, the honest journey of the ups and downs of healing. There was a lot I resonated with, the challenges of wanting answers, the weight of responsibility we take on our shoulders when the medical system has a protocol that doesn't answer our questions, offer much-needed support, be able to provide an acceptable solution and at times dismisses our need to understand the root cause. With so much information on the internet, Irene, with medical training, navigates and explores the possibilities and shares her wisdom and findings of alternative and integrative ways to find healing. Jen Wilson, The Healing RebelAn important book with a groundbreaking message. Irene's book is a powerful story of courage and persistence as she takes us on her quest to uncover the 'why' of her illness and recover her health. And she doesn't pull any punches about what it has taken her to save herself from Alzheimer's. Irene brings together a great deal of information and research about the condition, its symptoms, and its cause and presents it in an articulate and thoughtful way. She ends the book with a rallying call for us to become more aware of the consequences of our current way of living on our children. Fi Sutherland Author, Coming Home, Awakening Through The Stillness Into The Living Light Teacher, The ISIS School of Holistic Health Irene Smith is an exceptional health professional who implements the old axiom of ""healer heal thyself"". When faced with the all too familiar symptoms of Alzheimer disease, she knew, first hand, that the western medical model was of little help. Irene was looking for cure. This in itself is a huge leap of courage. The book takes you step by step through the twists and turns of setbacks and breakthroughs until actual recovery from all the symptoms associated with Alzheimer's disease. Irene's journey ended well and she gathered a treasure of practical information that shows there is so much more we can do to discover cause and therefore cure. The book is a huge source of inspiration that motivates the reader towards reclaiming cognitive health. It is incredibly well written, clear and easy to follow. As the number of dementia and Alzheimer's sufferers increases daily, this book is a ray of hope.
