This book provides a comprehensive overview of the basic principles, concepts, techniques and latest advances in the field of biomembranes and membrane-associated processes. With new emerging technologies and bioinformatics tools, this is a promising area for future study and research. The book discusses the composition, fluidity and dynamic nature of phospholipid bilayers, which vary with cell/organelle type and function. It describes the various types of transport proteins that facilitate the transport of polar and nonpolar molecules across the membrane actively or passively via ion-channels or through porins. It also explores the many cellular functions membranes participate in: (1) energy transduction, which includes the electron transport chain in inner membrane of mitochondria and bacterial cytoplasmic membrane and photosynthetic electron transport in thylakoid membranes in chloroplast and photosynthetic bacterial membranes; (2) cell–cell communication involving various signal transduction pathways triggered by activated membrane receptors; (3) cell–cell interactions involving various types of adhesion and receptor proteins; (4) nerve transmission involving opening and closing of voltage gated ionic channels; and (5) intracellular transport involving the processes of endocytosis, exocytosis, vesicular transport of solutes between intracellular compartments, membrane fusion and membrane biogenesis.

Dr. Rashmi Wardhan has presented papers at various national and international conferences and published in a number of prestigious journals including the DU Journal of Undergraduate Research and Innovation and International Journal of Health and Life-Sciences. She has successfully completed her Projects as the principal investigator funded by the University of Delhi. She has received a certificate of the best poster award for her research project display by the University of Delhi in 2016. Previously, she had worked as a research associate at the School of Biological Sciences, Flinders University, South Australia and as a Pool Officer (Senior Research Associate) at the Department of Biochemistry, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. Apart from being a biochemistry addict, she is also a passionate traveler and a trekker. Dr. Padmshree Mudgal is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at Daulat Ram College, University of Delhi. Dr. Mudgal has published in a number of prestigious journals, including the DU Journal of Undergraduate Research and Innovation, International Journal of General Engineering and Technology, Molecular Reproduction and Development and Archives of Andrology. She has also been involved in independent projects funded by the University of Delhi. Dr. Mudgal has been the recipient of various awards, such as the Biochemistry Merit Medal during her M.Sc. at PGIMER, Chandigarh; the Daulat Ram College Society’s Shri Mahendranath Gupta Memorial Prize; Best Innovative Idea and teaching Excellence Award for Innovation by University of Delhi in 2015. Both the authors have vast experience, spanning more than two decades, teaching biochemistry, especially cell membrane biology. Therefore, they have an in-depth understanding of nuts and bolts of the subject and its global curriculum at undergraduate/graduate level.
