This book is all about ways to improve quality of lifestyle in residential aged care. It targets the role of the direct care workers, in particular Recreation Activity Officers (RAOs). Leisure and lifestyle theory and practice is simply explained, including implementation methods for Australian Aged Care Quality Standards and legislation. It explores current psychosocial research which links to each of the 7 key elements, and shows how understanding it can enhance lifestyle facilitation. Many hands-on practical ways to apply each are described.

The 7Cs are explored in individual chapters- showing we Care, effective 2-way Communication, Connection with others both within and outside the facility, resident Control over their lifestyle, the importance of options for Challenge and Creativity and opportunities to make a Contribution.

Further chapters focus on other important aspects of this role, including essential information for the new lifestyle worker, professional aspects of facilitating groups and one-on-one sessions, understanding resident behaviours and ways to avoid the emotional stress of the role.

Legislation for restrictive practices and notes on Serious Incident Reporting have been updated for this second edition.

This book relates to residents both with and without a diagnosis of dementia.

The author combines her experience as a Medical Scientist, Diversional Therapist and teacher in writing this book.
