ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- Silvester was once a very famous puppeteer, but now is old and lonely. One day he climbs up to his workroom and makes one last puppet. But this creation is special – he has a spark of life, and learns simple words and how to move with help. This inspires Silvester to go out into the world again, where he and Kenneth the puppet meet Fleur and her mother Antonia. Fleur is a quick and kind girl, prone to creating her own little people, and so Silvester starts to teach her his craft and how to put on a show. It is the start of her own story...

A modern retelling of Pinocchio, this is a touching and warm-hearted novel, with a hint of the metaphysical (as all Almond's books contain) for any thoughtful reader aged 10+. Illustrated throughout by Lizzy Stewart, whose line drawings enhance the story. Lindy

From Hans Christian Andersen Medal-winning author David Almond comes a heartwarming story that shows anything is possible with imagination and trust. What should a puppet master do when he’s old and alone, and all his puppets are gone? Sylvester makes one last puppet. But this one is different. When the old man speaks to him, Puppet speaks back. And then he walks…

While Sylvester shows Puppet the town, the playground and the wonders the world holds, Puppet in turn helps Sylvester to make a new friend, and share his puppet-making skills with the next generation in this wonder-filled story of creation and the circle of life.

Illustrated with sequences of wordless spreads by award-winning artist Lizzy Stewart, this is a modern-day classic.
