Over the past 50 years, there have been some dramatic changes in how children are raised, fed, and educated. In looking at both child-rearing practices and children’s education, one of the most obvious changes is this–as a society, we seem to have lost our most basic common sense about the natural relationship between physical wellness and mental health, and in so doing we’ve forgotten how interconnected we really are to the natural world around us. As has always been true, children need good food, adequate sleep, plenty of fresh air and sunshine, and opportunities for physical work, play, and exercise. With these observations in mind Naturopathic Wisdom provides a basic, common-sense roadmap for the implementation of safe naturopathic practices that are desperately needed for today’s children. More specifically, this book will:

Highlight relevant aspects of the author’s own illness-to-wellness story Share professional observations and insights gained from a mental health practice of 30+ years Propose simple, safe, naturopathic interventions for the physical and mental health conditions in children and teens  Detail the research that supports these practices

Marlo Payne Thurman began her career as a school psychologist. Early on, she also worked in various mental health centers, group homes, and in private therapeutic hospitals and day schools, as well as in a behavior treatment center for children with autism. This led her into the field of autism. From there, she expanded her work to address the broad needs of all gifted and twice-exceptional learners, including those diagnosed on the autism spectrum. In 1994, Marlo opened a private practice to provide assessments, advocacy, special education consultation, and sensory and behavior support to meet the needs of a growing population of gifted, twice-exceptional, and learners with autism. Then in 1999, she expanded her learning and teaching models to own and direct the Brideun School for Exceptional Children, which was a play-based, therapeutic day school serving over 150 children in grades 1-8 who were identified as “twice-exceptional.” Marlo later created 2E Consulting Services to expand her testing services and to train and support individuals and programs working with a wide range of asynchronous and neuro-diverse learners. With doctoral-level training in both School Psychology and Special Education, an added Doctor-Level training certificate in Original Medicine in the field of Naturopathy, and specialized training and licensure in addiction counseling, Dr. Thurman has worked with over 3500 clients across her 30-year career history. Marlo has been recognized for her work by People Magazine, the Special Educator, ADDitude Magazine, the New York Times, and National Public Radio. She has published several studies, written five articles for Psychology Today, and won awards for her first book Autism is the Future.
