Cat first started writing when someone thrust a pencil into her hand. Unfortunately as she could neither read nor write properly at the time, none of her stories actually made much sense. However as she grew up, they gradually began to take form and, at the tender age of nine or ten, she sold her dolls' house, and various other toys to buy her first typewriter - an Empire Smith Corona. She hasn't stopped bashing away at the keys ever since, although her keyboard of choice now belongs to her laptop. The need to earn a living led to a varied career in sales, advertising and career guidance but Cat is now the full-time author of a number of supernatural, ghostly, haunted house and Gothic horror novels and novellas, including The Garden of Bewitchment, The Haunting of Henderson Close, the Nemesis of the Gods trilogy -Wrath of the Ancients, Waking the Ancients, Damned by the Ancients - The Devil's Serenade, Dark Avenging Angel, The Pendle Curse, Saving Grace Devine and Linden Manor. Her short story, 'Miss Emmeline's Mirror', recently appeared in the anthology Haunted Are These Houses. She lives north of Liverpool with her longsuffering husband and black cat (who remembers that her species used to be worshipped in ancient Egypt and sees no reason why that practice should not continue). When not slaving over a hot computer, Cat enjoys rambling around stately homes, circles of standing stones and travelling to favourite haunts such as Vienna and Orkney.
""A compelling, immersive, and intense time-slip horror novel with sympathetic characters that readers actively root for. The tale reads like The Devil in Silver by Victor LaValle if it were written by Sarah Pinborough."" -- Library Journal ""I’m getting really close to calling the race for best British genre novelist of the 21st century (thus far) for Catherine Cavendish, and the author’s new novel In Darkness, Shadows Breathe just might be her best yet."" -- iHorror ""The story of female resilience at the heart of this well-constructed gothic tale is sure to please fans of women-driven horror."" -- Publishers Weekly ""[...]if there is a crown of queen of gothic horror, [Catherine Cavendish] should be wearing it."" -- Modern Horrors ""In Darkness, Shadows Breathe is a good way to start 2021, because it’s a novel centering around recovery, something the world can relate to right now. Cavendish shines in the ways she’s connected to the story, making herself vulnerable to not only her readers, but to the ghosts that haunt her."" -- Aiden Merchant ""A story that creeps up and drags you in until you are almost as scared as the characters you are reading about. Magnificently, dark, eerie and all-consuming in it’s telling. A Gothic tale for a dark night, or not! Depends how easily scared you are really"" -- Beyond the Books “The writing is beautiful and an absolute pleasure to read, with the transition from modern renal ward to Victorian squalor (or reality to Otherworld) being almost tangible.” -- The Catbox
