This text explores how to design, implement and sustain processes to meaningfully engage youth and marginalised populations in local and multilateral decision-making.

Drawing on perspectives from across regions, generations and disciplines, the book balances research, advocacy and practice to provide a critical reflection on the mainstreaming of youth participation into the levers of systems change. Prompted by the breadth and scope of youth climate protest action, these narratives ignite new pathways for building trust and improving civic participation in achieving institutional change. The authors in this collection lean into the tensions and breakthroughs emerging in and from these sites of transition and potential transformation.

The book is written by and for activists, students, scholars and practitioners from around the world. This multidisciplinary work is a refreshing and indispensable guide for undergraduate and graduate students interested in civic participation, youth development and livelihoods, climate action, global development, social movements and multilateral cooperation.

Reviews for Global Youth Protest, Climate and Education

""In a world where I can be anything, I purposefully chose to be a climate activist, not because I want to. We are born into a climate crisis that is the result of multiple forms of systemic injustices and oppression. Activism feels normal because we are a part of a system that is woefully unjust. Global Youth Protest, Climate and Education shows the real-life stories, struggles, and joy of young climate warriors and underscores the urgent need for concerted action. A must-read for anyone who wants to be an ally and understand the heart and soul of the global youth climate movement. Thank you for writing this."" - Shreya KC, Leading Youth Climate Activist from Nepal, 'International Steering Committee Member' of the Red Alert Campaign by Save the Children, and Advocacy Working Group Co-Coordinator in the Loss and Damage Youth Coalition “This collection of diverse voices and perspectives is timely and urgent. In identifying opportunities, potential, and barriers, it provides hope for the future while not abrogating the responsibilities of policy makers in the present.” - John Gilroy, Climate and Sustainable Development Lead, Permanent Mission of Ireland to the United Nations “Youth climate activists are the driving force behind the transformative and ambitious climate action that the world needs. This timely and much-needed book highlights the importance and experiences of youth from around the world, providing critical insights to amplify the power of young people in advocating for change.” - Dr. Adelle Thomas, Senior Director of Climate Adaptation, at the Natural Resources Defense Council and Senior Fellow, University of The Bahamas “This book is a key work to highlight the importance of education in the contribution of young people in the fight against climate change and the future achievement of hope.” - Pedro Martínez Ruano, Counsellor of Education of the Spanish Embassies in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg
