"On the occasion of his 65th birthday, Garry Cosnett took stock of his full and eventful life and was stunned to realize how much of it had been flavored by his largely hidden and recurring battle against clinical depression.

Cycling through numerous colleges and universities, and seeking a relief from pain through a remarkable series of psychiatrists, hospitals, relationships, jobs, and drugs, he realized that sharing his candid story might bring hope to other sufferers. Because, at the end of it all, he has found a kind of peace - one preserved by attentive physicians and never-ending vigilance on the part of him and his wife, to whom he dedicates the book.

""Most important,"" he writes, ""this is a book about hope. Hope that even in the most pernicious cases, depression can be managed, like so many other chronic diseases. I am a living example of that possibility."""

Reviews for Everything Slows Down: My Hidden Life with Depression: How I Survived, What I Learned

"""Cosnett writes with clarity about his experiences, ably depicting the ways life slows down at the onset of depression. He conveys both his determination and his profound helplessness, and readers may appreciate his honesty and perhaps his suggestions for quieting the noonday demon."" Kirkus Reviews ""Garry Cosnett is a generous and learned man who has had to face down serious clinical depressions and multiple other challenges in his halting but ascendant journey of life. He makes clear here the havoc a severe recurring depressive illness can bring to a life: his grandmother's and his mother's ""spells"" and his own excruciating depressions. ""More than that, he tells us stories that depict how he has mastered that havoc and created a life within, around, and in spite of his depressions. I hope this book will give hope and courage to many thousands of readers who are striving to conquer the havoc brought on by a wretched brain disease that we know only as depression."" J. Raymond DePaulo, Jr., M.D., University Distinguished Service Professor and Co-Director of the Mood Disorder Center, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine ""In his generously honest portrayal of living with depression, Garry Cosnett shares a hopeful message stressing the importance of advocating for yourself and trusting your family and treatment team. He is able to describe vividly his experiences with depression in a way that will be comforting to those with this illness and educational for family members supporting them."" Karen L. Swartz, M.D., Myra S. Meyer Professor in Mood Disorders and Director of Clinical and Educational Programs of the Johns Hopkins Mood Disorder Center, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine"
