Hepatology is a branch of medicine concerned with the study of the gallbladder, liver, biliary tree and pancreas, and their associated disorders. The management of diseases related to viral hepatitis and alcohol is an important domain of hepatology. Nearly 2 billion people have been infected with hepatitis B virus at some stage in their life, while around 350 million people are carriers. Hepatitis B and C viruses are associated with up to 80% of liver cancers. Such widespread infection is increasingly being countered by strict screening before blood transfusion and widespread vaccination. The scope of hepatology is wide and specialists in this domain may be involved in a number of diverse regimes, from drug overdose and liver disease to cancers and liver transplant.
