The Absolutes was inspired by Kate Potter's father and the loss of his only son; her half-brother disappeared in the United States in the 1970s and it was believed he may have joined a cult. She wrote The Absolutes as though seeing this experience through her father's perspective: 'My father and his son were ghosts throughout.' Kate grew up in the UK, France, The Netherlands and Norway and studied English Literature at Utrecht University, before moving back to England to study Fine Art.
