Fans of Mary Jane Staples's charming series of novels about the Adams family will be thrilled with this instalment of the adventures of the Chinese Lady and her ever-increasing clan. It's soon after the war and the Chinese Lady's husband, Edwin Finch, is to have a knighthood conferred upon him as a reward for his secret government work. Their forthcoming visit to Buckingham Palace causes the soon-to-be Lady Finch to be in more than her usual state of flutter and her smelling salts are never far away. Their grandson Paul has mixed feelings about his grandfather's honour - as a member of the Young Socialists he believes that all people should be equal, and his views are supported by his assistant Lulu, who also has strong opinions on women's rights. Meanwhile his Uncle Sammy is worried about the way his clothing business is going. Always one for a good bit of profit, he can't quite get his head around this new fashion that women are succumbing to. Jeans to him are cowboy clothes, but it looks like he's going to have to forsake his principles and start stocking them. However, all problems are dealt with in the typical Adams way and all the family are delighted as Sir Edwin and Lady Finch finally make it to the Palace. A delightful and engrossing read, this will be enjoyed by all fans of the family saga. (Kirkus UK)
