After a successful career writing for radio, R.D. Wingfield turned his attention to fiction and created the character of D.I. Jack Frost, who has featured in the titles Frost at Christmas, A Touch of Frost, Night Frost, Hard Frost, and Winter Frost. The series has been adapted for television as the perennially popular A Touch of Frost starring David Jason. R.D. Wingfield died in 2007.
As so often, when a literary detective is given a television incarnation, the real strength of a writer's work is how strongly the original characterization remains in the reader's mind when encountering a new book. Such is Wingfield's skill, that we barely think of David Jason in this exemplary new offering, with his less than polished detective protagonist encountering a curious rash of crimes. Local prostitutes are being murdered by what looks like a serial killer, while a demolished garden shed reveals a long-buried skeleton. Armed robberies, ramraids and burglaries also exercise Frost's fertile brain, but his main concern is for the safety of a missing schoolgirl. And when the strangled body of another little girl is found, Frost starts to make connections. One of the most eventful of Wingfield's sublime police procedurals, this will keep enthusiasts more than happy. (Kirkus UK)
