A major new talent for Puffin. Sabine Durrant has the laugh-out-loud humour of Louise Rennison, the sharp perception of Anne Fine and the instant girl-appeal of a younger Bridget Jones.

Welcome to the world of Connie Pickles. Best Friend #1 - Julie- Big boobs. Big ideas. Big fibber. Best Friend #2 - William- Giver of chocolate buttons. A shoulder for Connie to cry on. Makes other girls flutter and blush. Best Friend #3 - Delilah- hormone-crazed victim of a girls-only school. Flutters and blushes A LOT. Mother- French. Beautiful. Broke. Bra-expert. A romantic disaster area. Needs help.

Connie used to be the only sensible person in her world. But now her life is spiralling out of control. Her mother refuses to fall for the right man, William is acting strangely and Connie's own heart is in tatters. So with a little help (and a lot of hindrance) from her friends, she sets out to solve the eternal mysteries of love, money, French things (including kisses) and incredibly uncomfortable underwear.

Reviews for Cross Your Heart, Connie Pickles

In her journal, Connie Pickles chronicles seven weeks in her life, during which she sets her mother up with three different men, gets a job, quits a job, marches against the war, gets kissed, almost loses a friend and falls in love. Connie enlists the help of her best friend Julie to help find a boyfriend for her mother. They have three criteria: He must have money, have ties to France and be good with small children. However, even with this short list of requirements, eligible bachelors are scarce. Connie is so tied up in her schemes that she fails to notice the romance swirling around her. Her long-time friend, William, suddenly seems to be following her around. Her next-door neighbor, Delilah, is getting a reputation from all her partying and Julie has fallen in love. Connie is at once clever, funny and heartbreakingly real. Though at times a bit too familiar, Durrant manages to tell a fun and engaging story. (Fiction. 12-14) (Kirkus Reviews)
