Alf Proysen was born in 1914 in Norway, where he became an important figure in literature, music, television and radio. He is best remembered in the English-speaking world for his stories of Mrs Pepperpot (known as the ""teaspoon lady"" in his native land). The first book was released in 1956 to immediate success, and his stories have been loved by children ever since and have been translated into many different languages. He died in 1970 at the age of 56.
The little old lady who shrinks without warning to the size of a pepperpot in a story that is consistently slight. The outing occurs in Mr. Pepperpot's car, and during the course of the afternoon jaunt Mrs. Pepperpot shrinks five times - and collects a cat, a pig, a dog and a hen, which she must smuggle home without her husband's knowledge. The complications result from her attempts to keep all of this a secret from her husband, though he is solicitous throughout about her affliction and agreeable to keeping the animals once they are revealed to him, back home - which makes what little plot there is seem arbitrary. Mrs. Pepperpot's friends will want to join her excursion, bat there's just too much shrinking and swelling with too little point. (Kirkus Reviews)
