The title refers to the Fold, 'a period of time of variable length during which (the narrator is) alive and ambulatory and thinking and looking, while the rest of the world is stopped, or paused'. Think about it: everyone is frozen in time while he, the narrator, can do whatever he pleases. Well what for the most part pleases Arno Strine, who can induce this state at will, is not to cheat or steal, but have his innocent sexual way with women. The result is a very funny book, a fantasy about an endearing sociopath. Nicholson Baker, a young American writer, found fame with his one-note book about telephone sex, Vox; this, though, is despite its one-idea premise, a more remarkable achievement, full of startling examples of residual wisdom.
