""Treasures of Clerical Script from Han Dynasty Stele Rubbings
中国汉代碑帖隶书书法The Zhang Qian Stele, fully titled Eulogy for Former Lord Zhang, Former Chief of Gucheng and Magistrate of Dangyin of the Han Dynasty, was erected in 186 AD during the reign of Emperor Ling of the Eastern Han Dynasty in Gucheng County, Dong Commandery (present-day southwest of Pingyin County, Shandong Province). It was unearthed in the early Ming Dynasty and is now housed in the eastern corridor of the Dai Temple in Tai'an. The stele was commissioned by former subordinates of Zhang Qian, who had been promoted from Chief of Gucheng to Magistrate of Dangyin, to commemorate his administrative achievements and moral integrity.
The Zhang Qian Stele represents a pivotal transition in Chinese calligraphy, inheriting the stylistic elements of seal script and clerical script while foreshadowing the development of Wei-style stele calligraphy. Its brushwork retains the charm of both seal and clerical scripts, yet also hints at the emergence of regular script. During the revival of stele studies in the Qing Dynasty, the calligraphic value of the Zhang Qian Stele was rediscovered and celebrated. Prominent calligraphers such as Yi Bingshou, Ruan Yuan, Wu Rangzhi, He Shaoji, and Shen Zengzhi left behind notable copies of this stele. Alongside the Cao Quan Stele, it is regarded as a canonical example of clerical script.
The stele is characterized by its predominantly square brushstrokes, which incorporate rounded elements, achieving a balance of rustic simplicity and dynamic subtlety. The strokes are robust and unadorned, conveying an archaic elegance infused with vitality. Its structure is compact and meticulously arranged, with careful attention to the balance between inked and uninked spaces-creating a rhythm of expansive openness and dense intricacy. The characters often feature a top-heavy form, with components cleverly interlocked and harmoniously aligned, resulting in a composition full of idiosyncratic charm. The overall layout is dynamic and varied, with clear row spacing and irregular character spacing, enhancing its visual appeal.
