Author and photographer John Lander takes the magnificent UNESCO World Heritage sites of Japan as a starting point for exploring the country's architecture, history, customs and festivals. Lander, who has lived in Japan for 35 years, travelled to almost all the country's UNESCO sites: from well-known places like Mount Fuji to hidden temple gardens and hard-to-reach wild islands. This book also includes cultural elements listed as intangible world heritage, providing intimate portraits of Japanese cuisine, crafts and performance arts. With a lyrical preface by Pico Iyer and illustrated with over 180 full-colour photographs, World Heritage Japan is Lander's personal photographic tribute to a diverse and ancient culture - a stunning visual journey across Japan.

Reviews for World Heritage Japan

This is not the only photo book to be published on the topic of Japan's World Heritage sites but it is perhaps the most comprehensive recent publication, both in terms of the number of sites covered, but also due to the detailed explanations that accompany each photograph.--Oscar Boyd, The Japan Times Even at first glance, the reader can tell he is in for a treat with this 2019 picture book covering most (but not all) of the World Heritage sites in Japan. Pictures are big and bold, with bright colors. There are no small pictures that readers have to squint at, using their imaginations to guess what they are seeing. The book is 10 inches (25.4 cm) by 10 inches, a good size which, matched with its high-quality, glossy paper, shows off its spectacular photos.--Japan Visitor
