'This is a powerful novel that explores class, domestic violence, punishment and Australia's dark past. It's for fans of Helen Garner's laying bare of everyday Australia, Tim Winton's stories and Douglas Stuart's ability to see the world through a child's eyes.' Books+Publishing 'Tony Birch crafts a story that perfectly encapsulates the innocence of childhood, and the creeping recognition of how the world ignores the voices of women and girls.' Readings 'Birch treats the topic of domestic violence with customary sensitivity, and peoples his spare novel with wonderfully believable characters.' The Sydney Morning Herald 'Women & Children could be Birch's most beautiful and forthright book yet, one that speaks to the power of family to stand together in face of adversity.' The Guardian 'Women & Children is yet another fine novel from Birch filled with richly realised characters and a definitive sense of place. Reading his work always gives you the feeling that you are in the hands of a master storyteller. A pure reading delight.' Meredith Jaffe 'Tony Birch welcomes readers into his fiction with gentle strength. He deals with issues that would provoke anger in most people. But he doesn't write angry books. His work embraces readers in a way that is more likely to create change.' The Age 'Tony Birch's writing is as tender as a bruise.' Kate Evans, Radio National's The Bookshelf
