ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- This will be compared to Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird and that is both apt and deserved, without being a blatant knockoff and with merits of its own! Annabelle's family have lived in Wolf Hollow for generations, and are hardworking and decent farming folk who have managed to be comfortable if not well-off. It is just after WWII and the community is still affected by what went before, including the reclusive and gentle Toby who lives on the boundaries of Annabelle's family farm. When Betty, a slightly older girl, is sent to live with her grandparents, an element of malice and threat enters Annabelle's life, and when she tries to protect her younger brothers from Betty's malevolence, the ideas of right and wrong become confused. Then when Betty disappears, and suspicion falls on Toby, Annabelle finds herself in a moral quandary... A finely written and involving story that does not condescend to its readers. Ages 12+ Lindy Jones

Annabelle has lived in Wolf Hollow all her life: a quiet place, still scarred by two world wars. But when cruel, manipulative Betty arrives in town, Annabelle's calm world is shattered, along with everything she's ever known about right and wrong. When Betty disappears, suspicion falls on strange, gentle loner Toby. As Wolf Hollow turns against him, and tensions quickly mount, Annabelle must do everything in her power to protect Toby - and to find Betty, before it is too late. Powerful, poignant and lyrical, Wolf Hollow is an unforgettable story.

After graduating from Brown University in 1981 with a degree in English literature, Lauren Wolk spent a year as a writer with the Battered Women's Project of the St. Paul American Indian Center, and then worked as both an editor and an English teacher. Since 2007, she has been the Associate Director of the Cultural Center of Cape Cod. She is an award-winning poet and also a visual artist. Wolf Hollow is set in western Pennsylvania where her family roots run deep. Both of her parents were raised in that area, her mother on a farm and in a family that served as the inspiration for the novel.

Reviews for Wolf Hollow

Wolk builds her story deliberately through Annabelle's past-tense narration in language that makes no compromises but is yet perfectly simple. She realizes her setting with gorgeous immediacy, introducing the culture of this all-white world of hollows, hills, and neighbours with confidence and clear-eyed affection. Trusting its readers implicitly with its moral complexity, Wolk's novel stuns Kirkus
