William Perkins was a scholar, pastor, and faithful follower of Christ in a tumultuous time. He gave himself to the study of Scripture out of an abiding love for the glory of God among the people of Christ as well as for the training of future ministers in the doctrines of the faith. William Perkins's works have greatly influenced Christendom in the centuries that have passed. He writes with a scholar's mind and a pastor's heart. This book examines William Perkins's view of the biblical role of a pastor in the life of a local church in comparison and contrast to the viewpoints of the Reformers as well as others who proceeded after Perkins. The goal is to understand and evaluate William Perkins's thought, from Holy Scripture, in light of biblical pastoral theology.

Reviews for William Perkins on Pastoral Theology

"""The ecclesiology of William Perkins is a neglected field of study in historical theology. With careful analysis of Perkins's works--including from his sermons, expositions, and theological treatises--Justin Miller helps fill that gap and lays a foundation for further discussion by investigating Perkins's understanding of worship, the local church, the sacraments, hermeneutics, preaching, and poimenics."" --Joel R. Beeke, chancellor, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary ""Justin Miller calls Christians, and pastors especially, to hold true to the priorities of biblical Reformed Christianity in the local church, as modelled in the thought of William Perkins and the Reformed tradition through the centuries. What shines forth is Perkins's love for the triune God and his people, and how that love came to expression in pastoral doctrines which are equally relevant today as they were in Perkins's time."" --Matthew Payne, director, Stretch ""William Perkins is an ideal guide on the topics of church and pastoral ministry for a variety of reasons. His convictions were biblically fixed, yet warmly expressed. His position promoted unity, and in this stance he was unshakable. His exhortations were simple, yet gloriously Christ-centered. This work will be of value to any who seek to deepen their roots in these matters."" --J. D. Edwards, preaching pastor, Reformed Heritage Church ""William Perkins is considered by many to be the 'father of the Puritans.' Justin Miller has mined the treasure trove of Perkins's pastoral theology and returned with much spiritual gold, which he now shares with you all. Written in a lively and accessible style, and eminently practical, it is my prayer that ministers will learn from this 'Giant of Cambridge' how to be more useful in the Lord's vineyard."" --Todd Ruddell, pastor, Christ Covenant Reformed Presbyterian Church"
