Michael Chabon is the author of two collections of stories for adults, 'A Model World' and 'Werewolves in their Youth'; a children's book, 'Summerland'; the novels 'The Mysteries of Pittsburgh', 'Wonder Boys' (which has been made into a film), 'The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay' (winner of the Pulitzer Prize); and the short story 'The Final Solution'. His most recent work is 'The Yiddish Policemen's Union'. He also co-wrote the screenplay for Spiderman 2. His short stories have appeared in The New Yorker, GQ, Esquire and Playboy. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and their four children.
An astonishing collection of nine stories, which moves in style and subject matter with fluid, astute ease. Perhaps the best, 'Son of the Wolfman', explores the subtle tensions in the relationship between a pregnant woman and her partner; unable to conceive for years, she eventually bears a child to the stranger who raped her. The title story concerns two young, inarticulate boys, living in their separate, prickly fantasy worlds to blot out a bleak reality. The last story is evocative, amusing and horrific, a Baroque suspense tale which parodies its own gruesomeness. One or two of the stories seem lacklustre - but that's perhaps inevitable in a collection of such gems. (Kirkus UK)
