ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- I love a children's book that teaches me something I didn't know, almost as much as I love children's books that present what I do know in a form that can reach younger readers.
This splendid book is companion to the Wave Atlas from late last year, and is in a similar format. It starts with the water cycle, explains how oceans are formed and currents caused and what tides are, before detailing what a wave is and the Douglas Sea Scale that measures waves in a wind sea from 0 (glassy calm waves) up to 9 (phenomenally high waves) and then the swell of the sea, where 0 is no swell and 0 is confused.
With text that is both factual, and imaginative, and illustrations that range from descriptively technical to decorative, this is a wonderful example of a book that teaches, inspires and mixes the scientific with the artistic. Give it to anyone who loves the sea! Lindy
It's time to set sail and discover the wonder of waves.Come on an illustrated expedition across the seas to discover why the ocean has always fascinated us. Ride over wild seas and calm waters. Learn about currents, tides and how to classify waves. Be awestruck by the power of the ocean.
