'Having a basic understanding of what to look for when encountering Perinatal OCD during pregnancy and their postnatal will make the difference between someone suffering silently for years, and someone receiving timely treatment for a condition that can be treated fully.'

Written with clinicians and frontline workers in mind but equally accessible to those with perinatal OCD and their families, you can improve your knowledge and understanding of this often misunderstood condition. Every facet of perinatal OCD and the many factors that can influence it are considered. From the concept of being the 'ideal mother' through to the neuroscientific and psychological underpinnings of defining what perinatal OCD is, informs this book's robust clinical recommendations. Practical advice on how to best choose from a wide range of interventions including CBT, art therapy and family therapy will fully prepare you when working with pregnant or postnatal women. Calling for expedient diagnosis and treatment to be delivered with empathy and compassion, families and those experiencing perinatal OCD will also benefit from this deeper understanding, Dr Jayarajah also discusses the important topic of safe prescribing, giving guidance on the use of medication in pregnancy and breastfeeding, for treatment of OCD.

Reviews for Understanding Perinatal OCD: A Guide for Professionals

This is a rich and informative book that everyone should read who has an interest in maternal mental health. Written in a highly accessible style, it should be of interest to all relevant professionals (GP, midwifery, health visitors OBGYN and of course perinatal services). But this book's use of stories and reflection means that it may also be of real value to non-professional audiences. I heartly recommend this book and wish I had read it when I was pregnant and when I first started working with women with mental health issues. -- Dr Gwen Adshead, Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist A clinically rigorous book about perinatal OCD, written with palpable warmth. Jayarajah presents eclectic, evidence-based treatment approaches with clear explanations. An invaluable resource for clinicians, but also for new mothers experiencing distressing thoughts and compulsions. Timely recognition and empathetic care can transform lives; this book offers both. -- Dr Sabina Dosani MBBS MSc PhD FRCPsych, Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist
