This is one of the most well-written travel guides I've read and I plan to use it. Living in Milan, Italy, there are places I'm eager to see in the south, and Puglia is high on that list. This guide has been edited to ensure it's a good read while providing relevant detail on each location. Never overly exhaustive, it reads like someone who's passionate about the locations, settings, festivals, culture, and food is sharing first-hand knowledge. The walking tours are perfect, as they provide a good way to see each city with just enough detail on each site to know its relevance as you go. I also liked the recommendations for transportation, restraints, and places to stay, as these don't feel like online search results, but like genuine suggestions. I will certainly use this guide as I plan my trip and take it along with me when I visit Puglia. This book provides a great reference for visiting the heel of the boot! If you're looking for a vacation that goes beyond the typical tourist trip, this book shows you how to immerse yourself in the culture through the local festivals. It provides transportation guidance, lists of food at the festivals, accommodation suggestions, suggested walking tours and local history. A great deal of thought, research, and effort went into this book. If you are planning a vacation here or might want to do something in Europe out of the ordinary, get a copy of this book. his book is a great guide to exploring the heel of the boot beyond typical tourism. It covers local festivals, transportation, food, accommodations, walking tours, and history. Well-researched and thoughtful-perfect for anyone planning a unique trip to southern Italy. I live in Germany and have been buying all of the travel guides for locations within a day's drive. This one does not disappoint and we will be heading here in August with this book tucked in our travel items. It has a great list of must sees which we will take a look at in person and report back! I hope you get a chance to try this too! For now, great buy, excellent guide! For later, once we have done it in real life, we shall see!;) I have heard so much about Puglia from people who have visited there and was excited to read through this wonderful guidebook. The author gives a brief history of Puglia from ancient times, which gives a really good overview and starting point, but the book covers everything you wondered about and more. It was fascinating to read about Putignano's Carnival, full of light, floats, and festivals, where locals dress up in clothes from times gone by to reenact challenges of times past, such as the Disfada di Barletta. The author explains the difference between a Sagre, which celebrates ancient harvest traditions and has wonderful food offerings from cheese, olives, wine to pasta and Pugliese bread, to some of the religious festivals and explains the best time to visit, for how long and how to get there bearing in mind that these are super popular with locals as well as tourists.I am itching to visit the fireworks and street performances of Lecce and the ancient carnival of Massafra. How can I see everything? The book is sensibly set out with the festivals in chronological order so that you can decide how to make the most of a trip.
