This book centers on theoretical issues of phonology-syntax interface based on tone sandhi in Chinese dialects. It uses patterns in tone sandhi to study how speech should be divided into domains of various sizes or levels.

Tone sandhi refers to tonal changes that occur to a sequence of adjacent syllables or words. The size of this sequence (or the domain) is determined by various factors, in particular the syntactic structure of the words and the original tones of the words. Chinese dialects offer a rich body of data on tone sandhi, and hence great evidence for examining the phonology-syntax interface, and for examining the resulting levels of domains (the prosodic hierarchy).

Syntax-Phonology Interface: Argumentation from Tone Sandhi in Chinese Dialects is an extremely valuable text for graduate students and scholars in the fields of linguistics and Chinese.

Reviews for Syntax-Phonology Interface: Argumentation from Tone Sandhi in Chinese Dialects

Syntax-Phonology Interface: Argumentation from Tone Sandhi in Chinese Dialects examines the phonology-syntax interface and the related prosodic hierarchy based on tone sandhi (TS) in Chinese dialects. This book, one of the key volumes in the series 'Routledge Studies in Chinese Linguistics', analyzes rich data on TS in various Chinese dialects to reveal the organization of phonological components, to specify the syntactic properties that affect the application of phonological rules, and to demonstrate the incorporation of those syntactic properties into phonology.... In a word, this book takes a lead in exploring the syntax-phonology interface issues based on Chinese TS phenomena. It definitely will become a valuable resource for graduate students, researchers, and scholars interested in exploring linguistics and Chinese. -- Chen Ou (Zhejiang University), Lingua, Volume 242, July 2020, 102856 Syntax-Phonology Interface: Argumentation from Tone Sandhi in Chinese Dialects , : ? ? ? , , , , , , , , , -- , , 19 2017 4 622-629 , (Yuxia Yin, Tianjin Normal University, Contemporary Linguistics, Volume 19, No. 4, 2017, Pp. 622-629)
