The modern tire is the most complex, composite product in mass production. Yet given its complexity and required performance, there is little information in the public domain regarding its development. This book provides an introduction to tire design, construction, and manufacturing in the context of materials technologies used today, along with future trends and disrupting technologies.

Focuses on design and construction

Discusses the relationship between materials and performance

Reviews tire uniformity as a key differentiator among manufacturers

Evaluates design and construction features versus performance

Written for engineers in the polymer, industrial, chemical, mechanical, and automotive industries, this book offers a comprehensive view of tire design, including materials selection, construction, manufacturing, quality control, and future trends.

Brendan Rodgers was a Technology Advisor at the ExxonMobil Shanghai Technical Center, having moved to Shanghai at the end of 2014 from Texas, returning to Houston in 2018. He worked with the Butyl Technology team supporting programs for the tire industry. Before moving to China he was a development engineer at the ExxonMobil Baytown Technology Center working on applied nanocomposite technology, web-based information systems, introduction of new technologies in tire manufacturing, and then more recently the new and proposed manufacturing facilities in Saudi Arabia. Before joining ExxonMobil in 2002 he was an engineer at Goodyear Tire in Akron Ohio, and led teams working on truck tire, farm, off-road, and aircraft tires. He also had assignments in Ireland, Italy, and Luxembourg, working on original equipment automobile tires, industrial rubber products, and new tire materials technologies. He is the originator of a broad range of patents in tire technology and many industry publications. Brendan has a PhD in chemical engineering, studying thermodynamics, heat transfer through large rubber sections, and vulcanization kinetics. He has a Master's degree in Polymer Technology, and a BSc in Chemistry. He is married with two daughters. In addition to truly enjoying the job and work environment in China and Houston, Texas, Brendan enjoys long distance running, cycling, and swimming.
