Having survived more than a century of harsh assimilation pressures, Crow society today is alive and vibrant, far from vanishing. The author of this book attributes this resilience to the Crow world-view, which can be characterised by the Apsaalooke term for clan, ""ashammaleaxia"" - literally, ""as driftwood lodges"". In the same way that pieces of driftwood lodge together along a riverbank, so the members of a clan cling together in a turbulent world, each depending on, and contributing to, the strength of the whole. This world-view reverberates not only through clan and tribal life, but also through the spiritual relationship of the people with the earth and the cosmos.
