The traditional view of the relationship between business and the arts is very much a one-way affair: organisations may endorse, fund or publicise the arts but the arts have nothing to offer from a business perspective. The Value of Arts for Business challenges this view by showing how the arts, in the form of Arts-based Initiatives (ABIs), can be used to enhance value-creation capacity and boost business performance. The book introduces and explains three models that show how organisations can successfully implement and manage ABIs. Firstly, the Arts Value Matrix enables managers to see how organisational value-drivers are affected by ABIs. Secondly, the Arts Benefits Constellation shows how to assess the benefits of using ABIs. Finally, the Arts Value Map shows how ABIs can be integrated and aligned with organisational strategy and operations. These models lay the foundations for a new research area exploring the links between arts and business.

Reviews for The Value of Arts for Business

'The Value of Arts for Business is a must-read for scholars of management as well as for the business leaders who seek to enhance their management skills to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century business landscape. The enterprises of the future will be seen less as mechanical systems and more like living organisms. Giovanni Schiuma combines the analytical force of a scholar with the vision and sensitivity of an artist to produce a thought-provoking exploration. Various Arts Based Initiatives provide practical ideas and platforms to help leaders to blend aesthetic intangibles such as emotive knowledge with tangible technical knowledge to affect organisational value creation.' Nicolas Gorjestani, World Bank 'In today's turbulent business environment, we can not keep using the same tools, and expect different results. We need innovation, new thinking patterns, and different angles to look at complex problems. This is what the arts can do for business. This book provides an innovative approach to engaging the employees, improving performance, and creating intangible assets for the organisation. It challenges the rigid view of organisations, and provides practical approaches that open new horizons for performance. We all need to read this book and add the arts to our tools in search of excellence.' Yasar Jarrar, PricewaterhouseCoopers 'This book asks - and answers - an important question: what is the role of arts in business? Beautifully explained, The Value of Arts for Business shows how you can use the arts to stimulate innovation … as well as engagement and passion. An important work on an important subject.' Andy Neely, Advanced Institute of Management Research
