Over the years, Derek Cross' photographs have graced the pages of many magazines and several photographic albums featuring his work have been published, recalling railway scenes which have changed radically in the space of a few short decades.

Drawing upon his extensive collection of colour images taken from the late 1950s through to the early 1980s, this new collection of the photos of Derek Cross focuses on those years which saw the elimination the steam locomotive and its replacement by the first generation diesel and electric traction, a period which is of so much interest for many railway enthusiasts.

The photos are arranged geographically and whilst they range across many parts of Britain, many were taken in those areas with which is work is synonymous including the south-west of Scotland, the Somerset & Dorset line and Kent and the south east.

The book will include more than 200 colour photos and has been complied by Derek Cross' son David who has also written the captions. These that have been compiled drawing on his father's notes. This new album is a visual delight and a fitting tribute to one of the great railway photographers of his era.

One of the foremost names in railway photography in the second half of the twentieth century was that of the late Derek Cross. He was an acknowledged master of his art and whether working in colour or black and white, through his technical ability and his acute eye for composition, he was always able to convey the splendour of the railway in the landscape.

Reviews for Railways Remembered: Images from the Derek Cross Collection

What's your preference? Whether 1970s BR blue, 1960s main line and industrial steam, or the 'transition' era, this collection of more than 200 colour pictures from Derek Cross 'ticks all the boxes'. Derek continued 'line-siding' after 1968's steam finale. He was one of the few photographers to capture ordinary, late-1960s/early-1970s scenes, especially in places that by then were 'off the beaten track' such as the Scottish Highlands. It's a rare feast. Also, unlike many photographers, Derek kept notes and his son, David, uses them as the basis for captions that add much to the pictures. While Scotland and England's north feature heavily, chapters are also devoted to North Wales, Cornwall and the West Country. A helpful index lists pictures by locomotive number and location. Most of the pictures, which are used one to a page, have not been previously published. It's a treasure trove of ever-changing delights and reveals Derek's mastery of the camera. All shots are very good, some are great; a number would have benefited from sympathetic treatment in Photoshop - but don't let that put you off. -- n/a * Trackside Magazine * An interesting publication that is worthy of a place in any collection. -- AB * Trackside Magazine *
