This book contends that ancient racial ideologies--encompassing prevailing beliefs, attitudes, and practices regarding race--provide valuable insights into the Gospel of John's portrayal of the Holy Spirit. It examines the racial rhetoric surrounding lineages, racial violence, cross-cultural encounters, and the formation of a new familial identity, all interpreted through the lens of the Holy Spirit. By engaging with the Gospel's treatment of the Holy Spirit in light of these racial dynamics, the study offers a more nuanced understanding of how conceptions of race intersect with the emerging theology of the Holy Spirit within the Johannine community.

Reviews for The Spirit and Race in John's Gospel: Belonging and the People of God

""Estrada invites readers of John's Gospel to encounter so much more than a rehearsal of the life of Jesus. The Gospel transforms followers of Jesus into hospitable communities that are racially diverse, inclusive, and barrier-breaking. Estrada captures a message no less important for a contemporary world marked by hatred and division."" --Martin Mittelstadt, Professor of New Testament, Evangel University, Springfield, Missouri ""Some wonder if racial ideologies even existed in the ancient Mediterranean, while others utilize only modern racial frameworks in their readings of New Testament texts. Rodolfo Estrada helpfully cultivates a third approach, demonstrating how the world of John categorized difference while also showing how the Spirit's breath reveals the insufficiency of such frameworks. Estrada's pneumatic solution is a compelling invitation to 'see' race in John's Gospel through the Spirit's work to birth a new family of God."" --Holly Beers, Associate Professor of Religious Studies, Westmont College, Santa Barbara, California
