THE SEPTUAGINT OLD TESTAMENT, VOLUME I Genesis - 2 Chronicles
The Septuagint Version of the Old Testament - Brenton's English Translation (1844), with Illustrations by the German Masters.
The Septuagint is the Greek Old Testament - the scripture the earliest Christians read, the text the New Testament authors quoted, and the tradition preserved in our oldest surviving biblical manuscripts. This is the first volume of a facsimile reprint of Sir Lancelot C. L. Brenton's 1844 English translation, covering Genesis through 2 Chronicles.
Brenton's translation has been the standard English rendering of the Septuagint for nearly two centuries. This edition reproduces it faithfully from the original 1844 printing, restored from original copies without OCR rendering or resetting. A short preface by Solomon Books introduces the manuscript history of the Septuagint and its complicated relationship to the Hebrew traditions that have dominated Western Bibles since Jerome's fifth-century Vulgate - a relationship that the Dead Sea Scroll discoveries of the twentieth century have made considerably more interesting than it once appeared.
The edition is substantially illustrated. Forty-six plates drawn from the major Renaissance print traditions accompany the text, with woodcuts and engravings by Albrecht Dürer, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Georg Lemberger, Georg Pencz, Heinrich Aldegrever, Christoffel van Sichem, and others working in the period ca. 1470-1600. Additional illuminations from the Furtmeyr Bible (Regensburg, 1465-1470) and the Augsburger Wunderzeichenbuch (c. 1552) are included among the plates and on the covers. The inside covers reproduce paintings by Cranach and Bruegel. Two maps covering the ancient Near East and the geography of the judges period accompany the volume.
At 6⅛ × 91/4 inches and 586 pages the book is designed to be carried and read. This is Volume I of a planned complete edition.
