From Private to Lieutenant GeneralAdna Romanza Chaffee's military career reads as a chronology of the United States Army during the 19th and early 20th centuries. As a young man he volunteered to fight as an ordinary soldier for the Union during the Civil War seeing action in many of its most notable engagements and rising to the rank of First Lieutenant. At the close of hostilities, remaining with the army, he served during Indian Wars of the Central Plains and South-West in Texas, Arizona and New Mexico seeing action against the Cheyennes, Kiowas, Comanches and Apaches. When the war with Spain was declared he served in Santiago Campaign and thereafter with the China Relief Expedition which saw him engaged in the lifting of the siege of Pekin. Service in the Philippines followed. Chaffee concluded his career as Chief of Staff. This account of General Chaffee's military life is accompanied by an interesting account written by an American staff officer who also accompanied the Pekin Relief Expedition on Chaffee's staff.
