Stan Headley was born in Fife, but his family moved to Orkney when he was seven. His youth was spent hunting rabbits and fishing off the village pier. He was introduced to trout fishing at the age of eight and, although his first love in those days was sea fishing, he made almost all of his pocket money tying trout flies. After wandering about the UK and the Continent for a few years, he returned to Orkney in 1975 and devoted every spare minute to learning all he could about loch fishing for wild trout. His search for knowledge has taken him to most of the best wild trout fishing in Scotland and Ireland. He started writing articles for the national angling press in the early 1980's and the high spot of his fishing career was winning the Scottish National Fly Fishing Championship in 1990. Stan Headley is the author of the highly successful Trout & Salmon Flies of Scotland.
