As a renowned Taoist authority, Deng applies his own knowledge and poetic sensibilities to one of the world’s oldest books—the I Ching. Rather than using this ancient book of wisdom as a fortune cookie, Deng’s rendition opens it up so that it is restored to its purpose—that of an “art of living” manual. While mostly known as a tool of divination, the I Ching is actually a repository of centuries of wisdom. Most of the existing translations neglect the wisdom and philosophy of the I Ching.

Deng has taken a more holistic approach to the book —his aim is to expose the very basic wisdom and philosophy of the I ching so that it becomes more than “just” a divinatory tool, it becomes a manual for living—so that readers will be able to apply the lessons of the I ching to their everyday lives, not just with an occasional reading. What’s also new here is that no other I Ching lays out its philosophy beginning from simple premises then builds in stages in a clear structure. The language itself is friendly, open and welcoming without compromising the integrity of the original text. By comparing all the images of any given hexagram, readers will find a meaning that fits the context.

Reviews for The Living I Ching: Using Ancient Chinese Wisdom To Shape Your Life

Just back from La Gomera. What a place! It is like stepping into another world, and for walkers, it is magical. The terrain is wild and challenging, but rewarding. We did 6 of the walks in this excellent book - all we had time for - but we are already booking to go again. If you are into walking, mountains, wild flowers, excellent value local cuisine and unspoilt surroundings, you HAVE to go. And you should take this well-written book. Clear descriptions and plenty of useful details plus advice on where to stay, eat etc. I liked the GPS waypoint information too - La Gomera is not a place to get lost in, so this is especially valuable. We also used the La Gomera Tour & Trail Map from the same publishers - accurate and made of some clever, waterproof, tearproof stuff. Amazon Reader Review
